any thoughts...i have 256 internal and 512 in so-dimm slot....iMac 800 lcd....system profile reads 256 and 256??? would taking ram out and then reinstalling bring it back to normal??? any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated....g
Are you sure it is actually a 512Mb chip, and you weren't actuaally ripped off? Try the chip in another machine to see if it still comes up with 256Mb as well.
It is either actually a 256mb chip, or it is possible that is damaged. If it works in another machine though, it could be the way it is inserted in your machine. Give it a shot, and see what happens...
my iMac saw it as 512 pc133 ram for 6 months...now sees as 256 pc100 ram (and internal apple ram is seen as 256 pc100 ram too??? both are 133 ram)...oh well, will run hardware test disc and then take out ram and then...who knows what next...guess it gives me a project for the weekend...g
had this happen to me once before. the ram was poor quality, so the machine saw it at approx. half the size, and lower speed. my guess is you got PC100 ram, or the chip finally couldn't take running at 133, died partially and is limping along at PC100 now.

guess i will take it apart tonight...g
