Dig Camera comparison, Advice Please

My dad wants to buy a digital camera and asked if I could get some feedback on the 2 he has narrowed down to. Price is a definate concern, but so is quality. Also important are: compatibility, video-snippet ability, physical interface, memory media price, capacity, quality, and availibility, and ease of use. I thought the AI boards have lots of digital photogs and such and would be a great place to ask. Any advice is very welcome.

The 2 camera he has decided on are:

Canon Powershot G2 w/ 4.o megapixel, 3x optical, 2x digital advanced.

Sony Cybershot DSC-S85 4.1 megapixel, 3x optical, 2x digital.

I know megapixels aren't the only determining factor in picture quality, but is important. That is about the limit of my knowledge of digital cameras. Right now the Sony is about $135 cheaper than the Canon, which about $215 Canadian, a pretty big difference, when you think each camera is in the $1000 range in Canadian dollars.

Thanks for any comments.

I did check out those sites, and a few others and they were very useful, thanks. I would sort of like some personal recommendations/experiences from AI users though.

Another question my dad asked me today, that i wasn't able to find really concrete answers on. Both camera can do video clips. The Canon uses AVI and the Sony uses MPEG. Any issues with either of these on OSX? I thought AVI was a Windows only format.

The AVIs use a compressor that works fine in QuickTime. It's basically motion JPEG.
