Is a Windows iPod Coming?

Hey There! I was wonddering if anyone thinks a Windows iPod will ever come out. I love Mac stuff and really respect Apple as a company but just can't use OS X. I guess XP just works better for me, I guess that's what happens when you use Windows for years. However I really think it would be great for Apple to release a Windows iPod. I think it would give Apple a cause to educate Windows users about their OS and products. I'd really like to see a Windows iPod come out cause I think it would be great for sales and could help increase market share. For example they could inlcude a CD ROM showing OS X in action or even an interactive OS X demo. I think if Apple wants to convert Windows users, they need to get right in there face. I'd really like to see Apple move beyond 5% marketshare because they really deserve it. Your opinions would be great. Thanks

It would decrease marketshare, not up it. One reason people look at buying a Mac is the iPod. Make it available to the people with their wintel boxes and fisher price interface and there is one less reason to get a mac.

giving PC users the goods that makes owning a mac special and cool and attractive is not going to help increase marketshre. The iPod is not a huge profit maker. nor was it IMO meant to be. and neither will apple's future devices. They are made to show how cool apple technology is and to make people want a mac to use them.

BTW, iPod already has Windows support with a program called XPlay

I wouldn't worry, it's just a matter of time before some other company does a very convincing copy of the iPod using firewire or USB 2.0. I think Creative will be the first to do it. They offer firewire on all their newest Audio cards. Soon most PC's with a sound card will have at least 1 firewire port.

You are forgetting peryhaps that Windows users can use a third [artu spftware [aclage tp ise tje Mac iPod.

They can use the regular iPod with the Windblows software.

i agree. i doubt apple will officially ever support an ipod on windows. i'm sure they're fine with someone finding out a good way to have it supported via third party and enjoy the increase of sales, but it doesn't make sense for them to sell it to windows users officially.

i believe there are a small amount of folks who would probably buy a mac based on wanting the ipod. there are plenty of folks who are not particularly dedicated one way or the other and if they know they can get the coolest mp3 players and all those other great iApps on the mac, they might switch. even if it's only a couple hundred folks, in the long run it's a better source of income for apple than selling winpods.

Here's an article from 3-26-02 that talks about the choices Windows users have:

    <a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/020326/n26335769_2.html"; target="_blank">web page</a>

It talks about the companies linked in the post just above this one.

Apple can never officially support Windows iPod, because it would lose the leverage of iPod as a way to get people to buy Macs (although I personally find that debatable).

Not unleashing ALTD (Apple Legal Team of Death) on these iPod hackers is probably good for Apple's bottom line, though because the people who turn to these solutions want only the iPod anyway, and wouldn't buy a Mac no matter what.

    So I;d say it's win-win.

Thanks for the links. I'm gonna go out and buy an iPod now. I think XPlay software is cool cause i a way Apple is supporting Windows. See now, I'm going to buy an iPod and Apple gets my money. If XPlay wasn't around, Apple would not get any of my money. The lame thing is Apple don't really make much on the iPod so I guess me buying is no biggie. However, I will most likely buy this thing and begin to really like it. The more I begin to like it the more I start thinking about other Apple products. Cool, thanks for the links, I'm out to get an iPod. Oh by the way, I love Macs but a few things prevent me from converting. One, the OS is not as responive as XP without a shit load of ram. Two, I can't stand the dock. Three, I can't maximize my windows. That drives me buts. As soon as Apple addresses those issues I will go out and buy a Mac. Thank for your help.

true media player sucks ass but I never use it. You know it feels stupid not buying a Mac cause I can't maximize a window, but it just drives me insane. I was at a store using the Mac for an hour and after a while I wanted to pick the thing up and throw it on the ground cause I couldn't maximize my windows. Oh well, hopefully the option will come one day.

option plus maximize button "maxxes" the windows. doesn't work quite like windows because Mac OS has the global menubar but it works nonetheless

I can't see someone wanting an ipod and buying a $1000.00 plus computer to use it.

i think apple should NEVER make an ipod for windows. apple does not need to help them steal their own technology. besides, i think steve jobs would rather eat his left nut than make products for Big Brother (i.e. Microsoft). go steve!!!!!
