where should i buy my Powerbook: direct from an apple store, or from an online reseller (which includes bundles and the like)? please keep in mind price does matter somewhat (cheaper is better), and i am interested in things like shipping charges (whether these online charges end up adding a lot to the total price), warranties from different resellers etc. i am interested in a PB g4 DVI 800mhz, OR PB g4 DVI 667 mhz with airport card installed and 256 megs of ram extra. thanks.

    Funny I thought I just posted a message to this exact question... I must be going mad.. :confused:

    I purchased my Powerbook 800 DVI in an Apple Store. I thought this was my best option as I could literally go in a see what I was buying and ensure it was not a demo model etc. I was also able to purchase all the little extras i needed under the one roof.

    There are pros and cons to doing it online/offline (So to speak) but frankly going in is all the same you can usually get better bargins going into a shop (Not nesecerely and Apple store). Tho having said that I could have got one of those nice firefly drives if I purchased it online for free...

    Hope that info helps, oh yeah and if you can get the 800Mhz model, its mighty cool <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

    You only pay taxes if from Apple store if Apple has a store in your state.

    pyr3, Apple will charge you sales tax in every single state that has such a thing. So you can only escape sales tax if you live in Oregon, New Hampshire, etc.

    It's not whether or not a company has a physical store in your state, it's whether or not they have a physical presence in your state that determines whether they must collect sales taxes from you. They can collect sales tax even if they don't have physical presence, but it is required if they do have physical presence. In any event, the online Apple Store has always collected sales tax (unless your state doesn't have it).

    Here's a Mac pricewatcher type thing that someone on these boards pointed out the other day:

    <a href="http://www.macprices.com/g4tracker.shtml"; target="_blank">http://www.macprices.com/g4tracker.shtml</a>;

    If you live in New York you may want to buy locally tho.

    I have a customer that I do tech support for and he wanted a new 14" iBook. Rather than buy it where he could get the best price he bought it at J&R <a href="http://jandr.com"; target="_blank">http://jandr.com</a>; which is located in downtown NYC.

    Seemed odd to me at first but he wanted to do something for businesses that have been hurt by 9/11. I thought about it and decided that was really really cool of him.

    (J&R doesn't have bad prices tho anyway, just not the very best you can find if you shop around)

    Also New York state is offering tax free days from businesses in the damaged area. The next one is August 20-22. You can read about it here:

    <a href="http://www.state.ny.us/governor/press/year02/june6_2_02.htm"; target="_blank">http://www.state.ny.us/governor/press/year02/june6_2_02.htm</a>;

    Won't help with the TiBook tho 'cause it's only on purchases under $500. But you could still get an airport card, or something tax free and feel like you were helping victims (economic ones) of 9/11.

    Things are pretty bleak here job-wise and every little bit that you can spend locally helps.
