Who plans on buying 10G ipod?

I mean its $800CAD, does apple think people are on crack!?!?!?!?!

I was so excited when it debuted because I thought the 5Gig might drop in price.

Aw hell, who am i kidding, I wouldn't consider even the damn 5G for more than 50% of what they are currently charging. Apple can get away with this 50% profit margin bullshit on PCs, but not on consumer electronics.

the iMac has very low margins.

the drive for the iPod retails for the price of the entire iPod. i don't think apple is getting much in the way of margins on either product.

edit: oh yeah, and what the **** does this have to do with future hardware?

yawn.. the drive has dropped significantly in price. so much that Smartdisk now offers it in an external firewire enclosure smaller than the iPod for $199

Apple is selling them briskly at 399 and sees no reason to lower the price I guess.

I want a 10GB iPod but after I add a connection kit it would be 550 nevermind taxes and if I wanted to get it engraved. could easily jump to over 600

actually, apple is getting away with 50% margins on this consumer device, people are still buying them. they've sold over 125,000 units, so i'd say they're doing pretty well.

they'll probably sell a few thousand more until demand slows down, and only then will they lower the price.

if they can get $400 for something, why charge less?

    carrying case

    miniplug to rca

    miniplug to miniplug

and either an FM transmitter or cassete tape adapter.

I would buy that in addition. For the premium we are paying Apple should include a leather case. it only makes sense for such a "high quality" device

And you pay 200% margin on photofinishing, 2800% margin on coffee at Starbucks (and they use the lowest quality beans in the world) 500% margin on clothing, 666% margin on Nike shox shoes (how ironic) not to mention hundreds if not a thousand percent margin on batteries.

I worked at Loeb in Ottawa way back when I was in high school... A baguette cost the store $0.02-0.04 to produce... and they sold them for $1.29.

The point is that as long as Apple keeps selling lost of iPods at the current price, you're stuck payign whatever the market can take. Just remember these margin examples and think about all the items you buy.

I am in total agreement with the first post!

Apple has gone WAY over the top with this one. I too am from Canada, and the 10GB model ships for a 'mere' $799!!

Apple needs to get in touch with reality. There is no way, I'm going to blow over $800 on portable hard drive with firewire, that plays music. Let's get real here.

Maybe you American's are paid a little better than your neighbors to the north, and can afford such luxury items, but I still think the price is simply outrageous!
