The question is: what exactly are you wanting to do?

The extigy seems a bit... well, tacky. It's got features like automagically converting mp3s into surround sound - not exactly an audiophile feature.

I am about to buy an m-audio sonica which is just a usb -&gt; sp/dif digital and analogue audio out that does up to DVD 5.1 quality. You still have to plug the output into a DAC or 5.1 reciever to actually hear anything but its only about $60.

The same manufacturer does better spec'ed model with digital/analog in/out if you are a musician.

    check out the site <a href="http://www.midiman.net/index.php"; target="_blank">here</a>

But to repeat, it really depends on what you are trying to do.

I pretty much like the Extigy because of its cababilty of bringing surround sound to my PowerBook.

The sonica isn't really what I'm looking for. Does anyone else know of any similar products such as the Extigy that will work with the Mac?

    Thanks

if you read the sonica site linked above you will see that the sonica advertises itself as bringing surround-sound to laptops (and looks far more portable too). The features its missing are mainly on the input side of things.

I may have confused you by saying you need a DAC or 5.1 receiver for output. I was focusing on the digital out as that is what I will be using it for. There is also an analog out that will give surround-sound through powered speakers - check the site for more info.

I'm lookin at that Yahama RP-U200 pretty hard right now for my G4. Anything like that better? Plus, Ima prolly get a Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 sound card w/the breakout boz. They are going to have OS X drivers for their products this month. I'm lookin at doin something like that....like a 5.1 receiver and sound card hooked up to my Mac. Anyone got a better suggestion?
