Adding new alert sounds?

How can I add sounds to those in the sys. prefs? I try to add, but you are not allowed to modify "sounds."
Any thoughts?

you could have a look at <a href="

just drop the sound file into your.....
user/yourusername/library/sounds and it will be available to you, no need for root.
