I'm wondering about how OS X does its reinstallation . I know I'm supposed to just follow the CD as usual, but what does the installation actually do. Will it erease my applications folder or other root folders? Will I be able to keep my user folders and prefrences?

Depends if you decide to reformat the hard drive or not. If you don't I think the OS X installation leaves you home directory alone and only replaces the system files.

Yeah, I'm not going to reformat the drive, just reinstall the software. By system files, do you mean the "System" folder, or other folders besides that?

I've just reinstalled 10.2 and then back up to 10.1.5. It only seems to replace certain system files. Password, prefs, docs etc were fine.

Be warned though,if you look at the Apple discussion boards you'll see that problems have occurred for some when reinstalling. My printer driver disappeared off the face of the earth and i cant reinstall it. Other than that evertything seems fine.

Good, because all I need to do is reinstall the tcsh shell. Damn thing got corrupt and ereased itself. I heard i shouldn't worry though, its a common problelm that gets fixed when you reinstall.

By they way, you mean 10.1 not 10.2 right?
