Can I Get Rid Of It?

What should I do to uninstall OS X? I want to uninstall it preparatory to setting up a new 60G harddrive on my beige G3 desktop model. Can't live with only 4G anymore. But I know OSX has to go into the first 8 G of the drive, and I'm afraid when I bring stuff over from the old hard drive the drive won't know the difference.

That doesn't sound too clear, even to me. Hope someone out there understands what I'm talking about.

Not sure why you would remove OS X, but when I upgraded hard drives (20 to 60), this is what I had to do:

-Remove old hard drive, install new one

-Format hard drive, first partition has to be 8 gigs (use 7.9 to be safe )...

-Install OS 9 on to the 8 gig partition

-Install OS X on to the 8 gig partition and update to 10.1.5

    -Remove cd drive

-Replace cd drive with old hard drive

-Copy all non system files over

Now copying system files is a little tricky... first you should create all of the accounts you use in the fresh X installation. Then you can copy all the stuff from old /Users into the new /Users.

Then move any special kernel extensions and stuff you have on the old X installation (may require terminal).

Restart, and you should be up and running.

There is a program out there that copies X installs to other drives, I tried it but it didn't work for me. Might work for you, might give it a shot (takes a LONG time though).

I don't think you have to worry about making sure it's on the first 8GB of the drive unless you have it partitioned. If it is partitioned, you must have OS X on the first partition, which must be under 8GB in size. If it's not partitioned, it doesn't matter.

it's stunning how often people ask a question here at GB, and NEVER come back...

I'm coping with 6 grandchildren at my house on two other computers, but little by little it's getting done. Yes, I AM partitioning it. Maybe I don't HAVE to, but I really want to be careful with all the new updates, drivers, software, etc. It can't hurt to isolate things a bit, I figure.
