Dead Airport station?

Ok, in my apartment I used to live in everything worked fine with my airport. It's the old graphite station by the way.

Now I get to my new house and I plug it all in. It works for 2 minutes then my computer all of a sudden can't see it.

Every minute or so it would see the base station and before I could do anything, lose it again.

The base station is practically right next to this thing. Should I move my computer up onto my desk? Is there anyway to see if this base station is truly dead?

move the computer or the base station ... they may be too close or positioned poorly ... the antenna in the base station DOES have blind spots (directly above and below the antenna ... assuming it's mounted vertically in the housing).

If that doesn't fix it, i really can't imagine what would cause the symptoms you're getting (the symptoms would indicate a poor signal/reception)

    good luck ...

what is your signal level?? go to airport in menu bar, scroll down to open internet connect, make sure your configuration is set to airport and see if you have a strong signal....g

yeah, it's not just the bad signal...it sees nothing...even when the thing is right next to it on either side. I am also going to move it into a different room.

One thing I was thinking was maybe I set it to be a closed network and I can't remember the damn password. But, I did hit the reset button and try connecting to it.

This is just being a pain.

With the Graphite Basestation, there's a capacitor problem Apple acknowledged. Depends on the blinking pattern of your basestation...if it's all green, then it's some other weird problem...I had a middle red-blink, followed by all 3 blinking orange, which was (i suspect) due to the blown capacitor. Got a refurbed replacement from Apple, but heard a friend replaced the capacitor himself it it's now dandy...

The middle of my base station is solid green...and the right one blinks red every so often. I don't know if that's what you're talking about. But it's probably blinking red because I don't have my modem hooked up to it right now.

Under the Airport menu will it say "No airport networks in range" even if I don't have the thing plugged into my cable modem?

I wouldn't figure so. I still have tried it with the cable modem plugged in and have had no luck. It seemed to start when the base station got updated with the 2.04 software. I re-installed 10.1 with the older 2.02 software and it was still messed.

i have the white basestation...so i'm not sure about the grey one...but have you tried a hard reset...i think you power down the basestation, hook it directly to your computer with ethernet, then use a paperclip to hold in reset, turn on basestation, hold clip in for 1 to 2 seconds...middle light should blink steady...then use airport set up assistant to re program the basestation....as i said, not sure if this is correct with grey one...you could call applecare if it is under warrenty...g

sounds more like you have airport not on DHCP and don't remember the IP to find it...(or maybe simply need to have your computer on DHCP) hard reset is a good start...(came across something like that once before, don't remember how i fixed it though...)

Well I hooked it up with an ethernet cable to my G4 and restarted the base station. It shows up, I reset all the information...

Then I unplug it from my G4, plug the cable modem to it, restart the cable modem....then the same thing. Nothing.

Could this maybe be my Airport card? I did check the connection a few days ago, took the antenna off and put it back on just to make sure it was all tight and still no luck.

I guess I'll try to call AppleCare tomorrow. It can't be interference if the damn base station is right next to the thing. Grrrr.

Now I also called AppleCare today and they're going to charge me 50 bucks to basically do what I already did. So I told them no. How else can I go about getting another airport card? It's still under warantee so I can I just bring it into an apple store and they'll swap it out?
