Help! Confusion overwhelming me!!

I've been contemplating switching to OS X for some time now, and I've finally done it - ordering Jaguar just a month ago. A new PowerBook G4 is coming my way Wednesday also.

I need ADVICE!!! I've been going over what software to get for X and have gotten stuck in many, many ruts as far as whether or not to go completely X.

Software titles confusing me most of all are the utilities -- so many more than there used to be. I've heard that DiskWarrior is better than Norton (which also I've heard messes up the HDs on TiBooks) and that Virex beats McAfee and NAV. Then there's Drive10 and TechTool -- it's just getting too overwhelming.

What have y'all found to be a successful combination of utilities for keeping your Mac in good health when it's HD is torn between X and 9.2.2? And is it even a good idea to completely abandon 9.2.2 apps?

Well, the first question is what you'd be using 9.2 for. If you have no compelling reason to use 9.2, then just go completely X (and use Classic compatibility for the few apps you need in 9), it'll be better in the long run. I wouldn't worry too much about viruses, although if you really wanted a virus program I'd say grab a .Mac subscription so you can get Virex. I've read that Diskwarrior is supposed to be a very good disk utility for OS X, although if you wanted to use the terminal there's probably some commands to do disk utility stuff (fsck perhaps?). I'm sure others could elaborate on this much better than I can.

My Dad thinks Norton is the best, at work it's always the answer to the problems they get on their machines, we've got it at home now. I don't know about the other utilities but norton will sort out your Mac OS X and OS 9 problems.
