I don't use AOL - how do i remove the aol icon/menu from OSX

what AOL icon ?
if the icon is in the dock, then just drag it out and let go of it... it will disappear in a puff of smoke.
that is only an alias though... the program will be in the APPLICATIONS folder ... find it and trash it.
otherwise... supply more information.

the AOL icon next to the volume control slider in the top left hand menu area - it goes clock, battery, volume, iChat - How can I remove this iChat? icon

hold apple and click and drag the icon off the menu bar. You can also rearragne them by doing the same thing.
