I'm still holding out for something like this from Apple this year.
Wizard, I have quiet side bet or hope that Apple uses it's 100 Billion to give them a head start for retina Macs this year. Otherwise what is the cash pile for?
The implications of such a head start are massive to continue the Mac growth and create a bigger impact/leverage versus the PC market and an incentive for a swelling user base to upgrade.
If they can do it for the iPad why not the Mac with sales of about 5 million per quarter.
But will it come to the MBP as well now thats the question.
I'm not sure IvyBridge will have the beef required to drive a Retina screen well in the AIRs. For that reason I could see the MBP going Retina first. That and the fact that AIR suitable processor won't hit until July.

I find it ironic that an iPad has a retina display but a Mac doesn't. eg the Air. For over twice the entry price of the iPad...
I can type, surf, create, paint (as fast as I can in Photoshop with Procreate on the iPad. Awesome little painting app...), play 3D games at retina screen density...email...watch video...etc. etc.

Why?
It's hard to make screens like that. I don't find it ironic that my seven year old flip phone has OLED screens and my Mac doesn't. The screens are just 1" and 1.5". My Cinema Display is 27". I wouldn't want to pay for that just yet.
So is it really going to be next year ? 2013 ,,, thats a tad too long.
Why? The hardware doesn't exist yet. It can't come out any earlier than it exists, and you (meaning people) would whine about how bad the stop-gap solution would be.

It's following a normal progression. If you don't like it, don't buy one. With the way content is presently set up, this would be a feature, not a requirement. Outside of these boards, I don't think many people follow such things.

It would be a stunning coupe de grace.
