How can I retrieve iDvd after clean install of 10.2?

How can I retrieve iDvd without making total restore of all programs, including Os X 10.1? After reading the boards I found out it would be best making clean install of 10.2 and was just so sure iDvd was on the 'iMac Software Install' CD. But it's not there!!! Do I really need to restore the iMac back to out of the box condition to retrieve iDvd? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Have you tried making a disk image of the software restore CDs that came with your iMac?

Insert them and use the disk copier tool in utilities to make a disk image of each of the restore CDs. You should then be able to open the disk image and install the software you need from that (you also need 2GB of free HD space I think).

Sort of. The software for the computer is located in .dmg (first disc) and .dmgpart (other discs). Create a folder on your HD, and copy the .dmg and .dmgpart files to that folder. When you're done, double click on the file that's .dmg and it will mount. Just find the software you want and you're set.

    From kbase article 106451:

    [quote]

If you need an item that is only available from the Restore CD set, you may install it without erasing the hard disk by following these steps:

    1. Ensure there is approximately 2 GB of free hard disk space on your computer.

    2. Make a new folder.

    3. Insert the Software Restore discs one by one and copy the disk image (.dmg) files in the Configurations folder from each disc to the folder you created on the hard disk. There may be up to five images depending on the restore set.

    4. Open the Disk Copy application program.

    5. Drag the first .dmg file from the folder you created to the Disk Copy window. The disk image appears as a hard disk on the desktop. This disk image volume contains all the software that your computer did when it was first purchased.

    6. Open the disk image volume and locate the software you want to reinstall.

    7. Copy the software from the disk image volume to the hard disk.

    8. If you are using Mac OS X, use the Repair Privileges Utility.

It takes a while, but it works just fine. HTH

Well, I did it and it seems to have worked. However there's no iDVD installer, only a map with the program. I just copied the folder into the application folder and hope that's enough. Couldn't find any support files in the library. I'm not going to use it in the next few weeks at least so I can't test it thoroughly

[Sorry, ment to write folder instead of the Danish word map (folder) ] :o

map? There probably is no installer. Just a drag and drop thing so you should be set. I had to do this with world book encyclopedia. Just found the folder I wanted and dragged it to the HD. No problems other than the long time it took to copy the cd's over the the HD.

There is an iDVD installer there. I used Apple's process (and I burned the resulting disk image to a DVD-R) and reinstalled iDVD with no problem.
