And yet some sources still say that Apple is still planning a "living room gaming presence".
Well, I suppose that's true in the sense that they already have one. iDevices over AirPlay to an Apple TV. Works great!

iDevices don't even need to be connecting via AirPlay to be in the living room.
That perception of what it means to tackle the living really needs to be changed. The living room should encompass the entire area. While in the past this was primarily the HEC (home entertainment center) today's handheld, internet-connected computers are used quite commonly in the living room, often while simultaneously watching TV and/or interacting family/friends.
Apple has firm control over the living. It's the HEC that they don't control. Even with AirPlay users still need to make the decision to change their input to the Apple TV which seems like a kludge any way you slice it.
