iBook Sleep Question

Hi, I own an iBook 500 dual usb and I'd like to know what happens when it is in sleep mode. It seems to use 5 percent of battery life each day. What is using this, is the ram kept alive? How much does the led use?

Also, is there any harm to the computer if I never shut it down and keep it in sleep mode (closed lid)?

Thanks in advance.

    - of course the ram is kept alive, it wouldn't be called "sleep" if it wouldn't.

    - the led uses about nothing

    - how do you define harm ?
