Ok, I have a new computer with 10.2 preinstalled. I perform a clean install but need classic. So I order a 9.2 CD from Apple, but now it says that I can't install Mac OS 9 on this computer (mdd). I want classic. How?

First of all, as you have a new machine just call Apple support.

After a new machine comes out from Apple you have to wait for the next release of OS 9 before an off the shelf CD can be used to install the OS on your machine. As the last release of OS 9 was last fall (I think) then the newer machines cannot use OS 9 off the shelf.

You must have a CD that came with your machine that will let you install OS 9 (at least Classic). It may not be called that but it is there. Probably one of the software restore CDs. Call Apple Support. They can be very helpful.

    Ok, information...

    -New dual gig MDD

    -OS X 10.2.1

-boot from OS 9.2.2 cd, click install OS 9.2.2 and it says "you can't install OS 9 on this computer"

-no cd containing OS 9 comes with new (> 10.2) macs

-Apple's support site says that there is no OS 9 cd in the box, it says if you want one order one (which I did)

    -I need help

(all I really want to do is be able to boot into 9, I don't need the classic enviroment-if that helps)

I think that the OS 9 Classic layer can be reinstalled from the disks that came with the computer. It's part of the "software restore" mechanism.

First, start Software Restore (located in the Utilities folder inside the applications folder on your hard drive).

It will ask for the admin password. Type it in and hit Ok or whatever.

It will then ask you to insert a specific CD, showing you a picture of the disk. Put in the disk labeled Software Restore 1 of 4.

The system mounts the disk and offers you the option to restore ALL software or to check off from a list. UNcheck the "Restore ALL" box and CHECK the Mac OS 9 box. Uncheck all the others.

Continue, following the directions and you should get your Mac OS 9 back.

    Hope this helps

as far i know you can't install os 9 alone anymore.

if you need os 9 - you will have to use it in classic.

one more "feature" that came with the new dual's:

you can't partition the harddrive from the start.

looks like you have to install mac os x, config a user, boot up with mac os x install disk, go to disk utility in the install menu , do the partition's and install the hole thing again.

if anybody got a better idea - please give to us.

i have to do that kind of thing every day and it's a pain in the ass.

every time the last 13 years in my case.

    -insert system cd

    -restart mac

    -boot from cd

    -open "utilities" start "disk utilities"

    -partition your drive

    -install systemsoftware

A while ago I reformatted/repartitioned my hard drive and installed OSX only. I subsequently tried installing OS9 and couldn't. I believe it was because when I created the partitions, I had unchecked the 'Include OS9 drivers' check box (or similar). In the end I had to repartition and start from scratch. Not sure whether this helps at all.
