Setting up WEP w/AirPort Card and 3rd party router

I have a iMac (Rev D) hooked up to a Belkin wireless router via Ethernet and iBook (white -- 2001) with an AirPort card installed. Both can share a cable modem (DHCP) if I have no password or WEP set up. Once I set up password or WEP, the iBook can only detect the wireless network but not join -- the password does not work, even when put in quotes as suggested in the Apple manual. I've been trying to use 128-bit encryption, using a passphrase. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

When using a 3rd party router, the password is actually the the entire WEP hex key, but make sure you put a "$" (without the quotes) directly before the string.

Its a pain, I know, but if you have it save the password, you may not have to enter-in that long hexadecimal string again.

    Hope this helps =)

OK, if you have 2 or 3 WEP keys, do you mix the entire thing together, or use another "$" between them?

    Example:

    Key 1: ABCDEFG

    Key 2: 123456

    Key 3: abcdefg

    --------------

    1: $ABCDEFG$123456$abcdefg

    or

    2: $ABCDEFG123456abcdefg

When you have more than one WEP key, it means that you have a choice as to which one to use. In other words, you'd be using only one of the keys and not putting them all together.

On my DLink wireless router, it gives me the choice to select one of four generated keys to use to encrypt the data sent and recieved; this may be the same for your router.

The WEP key your router is currently using is probably the first one on the list. Try using that one as the password and see if it works, and, if it doesn't, try the other ones on the list.

    Awesome.

I will actually set up a friends computer next week. That's why I had the question.
