[localhost:Mail/Mailboxes/INBOX] lozen% ls -lia
total 80
158161 drwx------ 7 lozen staff 194 Oct 21 20:51 .
93295 drwx------ 36 lozen staff 1180 Oct 21 20:51 ..

231222 -rw-r--r-- 1 lozen staff 36 Oct 21 20:51 table_of_contents
the problem seems to be that the "158161 drwx------ 7 lozen staff 194 Oct 21 20:51 ." should not be a drw - r - r but a rw - r- r
also it shows me a mbox file, not folder in finder.
but if i open it in finder, it tells me there are subfolders. there aren't.
now WTF has happened?
how has rw-r-r turned to be a drw-r-r? i didnt change it.
how can i kake the drw - r- r = rw - r -r ?? dont tell me it's not possible.
i don0t want to lose those mails ((
heeelp
..

</strong><hr></blockquote>No, I think you are a bit confused about this. I'm surprised, though, since you have so much Linux experience.
In all *nix systems I've used and even in DOS, the '.' file in a directory listing refers to the current directory. So, it *has* to read something like "drwx------" that begins with a d, otherwise it wouldn't be a directory!

A '.mbox' file is actually a package. It's a directory that *acts* like a file. In the Terminal, it shows it as a directory because on the lowest level that's exactly what it is. The Finder, however, is more intelligent. It treats the .mbox package as an actual file. So, double-clicking it doesn't spawn a new Finder window -- it tries to open it as a file in Mail.app. If you want to treat it like a directory, though, you can control-click the package from the Finder and choose "show package contents" from the menu.
"mbox" files are not the only things to do this. There are LOTS of packages on Mac OS X. Most programs and applications are actually packages with the extension ".app" on them (but hidden in the Finder).
