Long Reformat???

I'm erase/reformating a 236gig drive on an iMac 24" G5 with Leopard and it's taking HOURS. I'm reformating because maching ran very slow and sometimes only booted to the grey screen with Mac logo and spinning gear. Might this indicate physical problems on the machine?
