City-wide Wireless Networking

Hmm.
Would it be possible to set up a tower system like cellular towers (perhaps ON cellular towers) that would provide wireless Internet access to anyone who bought the appropriate "modem?" (I forget what the term is in this case) I suppose it would take some battery power for the user to transmit back to the tower.
Is wide-area wireless Internet access feasable? Can I get on a bus in NYC and work all day without losing my Internet connection as it goes about the city?

Seems that this is a good step toward a city-wide network though.
