Hi,

My friend upgraded his powermac and is giving me his 400 mHz G4 CPU. I'm wondering if I can do a straight swap with my 350 mHz G4. Is is that simple?

thanks!

    Um, usually not.

Even if you have a ZIF (zero insertion force) processor, there is the matter of motherboard bus multipliers (either pins that need to be connected in a different order or actual soldering -NO NO).

IF you are exchanging the daughter cards, the process might be easier, but the issue of multipliers still arrives.

Also, note that you may be talking about different overall bus speeds, depending on where the G4 came from (66 mhz v. 100 mhz).

Is it impossible? NO. the problem is that you risk frying not only the "new" chip, but the motherboard of your computer.

More risk than reward, I think.

Truthfully, I doubt that it would not work. The motherboard should have no problems that I have heard of anyhow. Let us know what you decide and how it works out.
