When Mice Go Bad

I have an Apple pro mouse that has recently started acting very strangly. If my Powerbook is a sleep and I click the mouse button to wake it up, the computer freezes and must be rebooted. Also the laser on the bottom randomly goes on and off preventing the use of the mouse. The weird thing is that everytime I think the mouse has completly broke it starts working again. When I used it with a G4 Cube it completly stopped working, but it seems to like the Powerbook a little bit more. Is there anyway to correct this problem other than buying a new mouse. ?

Or has this mouse been forged from hell to torment me for eternity?

How old is the mouse? Those ones tend to have a reputation for going bad because of the weak connection where the cord comes out. It could be getting loose without any visible damage.
