I just got the new 800 12 inch iBook with the standard 128 ram. I'm running 10.2.2, with Office X, usually with explorer, word, iTunes, and sometimes Excel at the sametime. It seems a lot slower than my dell. I just ordered 512 mb of ram, and was wondering if that will speed things up a lot. What do you guys think?

Performance is simply intolerable with anything less than 256MB of RAM on Mac OS X. You will be pleased with the results once you drop that SO-DIMM into your portable.

most likely what you'll find out is that as the system stops paging info to the HD speeds goes up dramatically.

    Ahhhh welcome to the iBook

    I experienced the same thing....

I was used to the crisp lightning fast speed of the my Sony Vaio 1.7ghz PC running Windows XP

I bought my first ever Mac and found out the same thing.

    SLOW

I have 640m of ram and it is still slow...

I get to watch the spinner turn and turn just to launch Omniweb.

on my PC Explorer loads up in a split second.

In less than a split second I see my Google Start Page.

On the Mac I can go make coffee and come back.

Get used to it my friend.

I will say I love my iBook however.

It is slow none the less and Apple should take notice.

Yeah, comparing machine to machine Mac is always slower IMHO. I miss my Sony VAIO laptop as well but do like very much my overpriced iBook - the first Mac I used since 1996 and the first Mac I purchased.

Try Chimera. It's replaced iCab on my iMac DV 400. Usually very fast, although there are some exceptions.

Why? It's all relative. I have a friend with a Dell Inspiron 1.6 GHz w/ WinXP & service pack 1. It's about as fast with most tasks as my Wallstreet 300 w/ 10.1.5. Go figure.
