Formatting (for MacOS 9?)

When I formatted a disk with Disk Utility it asked if I wanted MacOS 9 drivers and I checked No. Can I still use the drive in OS 9 or am I risking corruption? I didn't think I'd ever go back to OS 9 but now I have VirtualPC so I am. I also have the VPC drive on this external firewire 129 gig drive. What did not checking MacOS 9 drivers do? Am I in trouble?

You can add OS 9 drivers later AFAIK.

    How? I have OS X 10.1.4 and OS 9.2.2.

And what why does a disk need special OS 9 drivers? Will my hard drive corrupt if it doesn't have "OS 9 drivers" and I use it?

Without said drivers, you simply cannot boot into OS9 from that drive. If you manage to boot OS9 from a CD-ROM, the drive will not even appear on the desktop. Any drive that you would use in OS9 has some kind of drivers. Without them, the system wouldn't recognize what it is.

You can, however, still use Classic through OSX on that drive.

If there is a way to add this later, I sure haven't seen it.

But I see the drive in 9 and I've been extensively using it in OS 9. Am I in for trouble?

According to the <a href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75275"; target="_blank">AppleCare Document</a> the disk may not appear when the computer starts up from any version of the Mac OS other than Mac OS X.

If it has in the past, I can't see any reason why it shouldn't continue to do so in the future.

Vague, as usual. What happens if I USE the disk in OS 9 without the OS 9 drivers?

If you're so worried about it, just go ahead and reformat the disk with that box checked.

The only problem I can think that would arise is exactly what I and RodUK have said: that the disk may simply not appear at all under OS9.

I haven't tried this, but perhaps you could start to install OS 9 on the drive, allow it to update the drivers, then cancel the installation.

If you have OS 9 on the disk you can reinstall OS 9 in place allowing it to install the drivers.

I don't think you will suffer any damage by not having the drivers. If they are needed and are absent then the disk simply won't appear.

Thanks neutrino! That's a very good idea, I will try this.

If you have room you could let it install the OS and then delete it if you don't want it. If you already have OS 9 on that drive you could also just let it add something small like speech to text.
