Can someone with a better memory than I have help me?

I'm trying to figure out why I have a 16 GB iPhone 4, when I know I've always bought the least expensive iPhone available.  I purchased mine in Dec. 2010.  Had they made a new release of 4's then where 16GB was the smallest?  I'm just confused because I'm fairly certain I only paid $199 for my 4 and I would think the 8GB would have been $199 then...
