Mac Book Pro Suddenly Running slow

It has been a while since I have visited this forum, but I guess thats because it has been a while since I have had any problems with my mac(s).

I have a macbook pro with a 2GHz intel core i7 and 4gb of ram.  I am running OSX 10.8.1 and now I can't get anything to work right.

My comp was working perfectly fine until two nights ago when the computer suddenly shut down when I was speaking to someone on skype.

After rebooting the comp is now ridiculously slow. Chrome takes forever to load new pages and even VLC player can no longer handle .mkv and .wmv files.  .avi runs fine.

I used the disc utility to "repair permissions" and as I expected that did not help anything.   I am not that tech savy that I can figure out what is wrong,  with how slow the comp is running I assumed the memory blew out because it cannot handle doing multiple task anymore.  The comp is still registering all 4gb of ram.

Does anyone know what type of diagnostics I can run or has anyone ever had a similar problem?
