iPhone won't act as a personal hot spot for my MacBook Pro (early 2011) - help

Why wouldn't Apple permit iPhone / MacBook tethering, that's the whole point?  That's why I have a phone plan that permits tethering.  Am I to try it with a Dell laptop or something?  I have two flagship products I want to talk to each other.

Has anybody else experienced this issue, know of a work around, or why Apple has done this?

Any plans to change things.. etc

Tethering prevention has nothing to do with Apple. Have you looked at the guide for the personal hotspot?

If you indeed have a phone plan that allows tethering, then you're simply doing something wrong. My iPhone 5 tethers just fine with my MacBook Pro, through USB, WiFi or Bluetooth, take your pick.

If you really aren't allowed to tether, it has absolutely nothing to do with Apple, as Tallest pointed out. Apple absolutely does not limit iPhone tethering, to any device. You can even (if your mobile plan allows tethering) connect your iPhone to a Samesung tablet. You'd think Apple would prevent that first... haha. Take it up with your provider.

This is very weird... I didn't think Apple would do it which is why I thought it weird but basically I am not doing anything wrong.  I used to be able to tether my iPhone 4 on Snow Leopard but that was back in Jul '11 and haven't had a tether phone plan before.  I should add I am in the UK,  This is what I do:

    - Enable bluetooth on iPhone 5 and MacBook Pro

    - Enable personal hotspot on my iPhone 5 "Now Discoverable"

    - On MacBook Pro I proceed with Set-up Bluetooth device

    - Searches and attempts to pair with iPhone 5, sends the code to my discovered phone

    - I get the congratulations message on my MacBook pro saying they're paired.  I go to quit.

    - On my iPhone in the Bluetooth settings it says Vince's MacBook Pro Not Connected and is still searching for devices.  I click the blue arrow next to it and...

Message... "Pairing Unsuccessful, Vince's MacBook Pro" is not supported".  I get a button to click.."Forget this Device."

    ? :(

OK, I tried one last thing.... resetting both devices, and things seem ok now.  For whatever reason something network related or technical got screwy with me.  I wouldn't be beaten though.  Damn I am good... sniff... "simply the best da da da dee...".  Cough.  Will try a few more things next time before bothering people here.  Cheers though!
