Greasy McPads. Who needs an Apple store when this one serves french fries.
If iPads end up at many McDonalds around the country over the next few years, this would be sort of a symbol that Apple became the computer company for the masses that Steve Jobs envisioned. And at exact same time Apple would lose it's coolness and become McApple.

"Roy Rash of Virginia Beach plays with an iPad as he eats his breakfast Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at the McDonald's at Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach. Hugh Fard, McDonald's owner/operator, has installed iPads at the tables of his restaurant for customers to use free."

I don't think they'd be uncool. They would actually be great in restaurants as you could sit down and order your meal from the table instead of from a counter or a waiter. You could look up reviews of a particular meal online before ordering and you could see the total bill.
In McDonalds, kids will play with them and convince some parents to buy one. Windows PCs didn't become uncool because of their ubiquity but because of their poor quality.
You could get it from the table too though, the iPad is just another surface for the staff to wipe down and disinfect.
I'd say the alternative is far worse. Back when Mac software was largely non-existant, you had a situation like the following:

That's what comes from being in a small minority. The iPad gets pretty much the first run of all mobile-targeted software and I like that. Even Android users have to wait a lot of the time despite the marketshare being around the same.
I want to see iPads replace cash registers and iPods/iPhones replace mobile POS systems in every store, I want to see every plane have iPads for passengers. It's time to get rid of the old tech.
I agree, I think our economy would run a whole lot better, but Apple (while achieving Jobs vision) would become something more like IBM. The Yang will have become the Yin in a strange sort of way.
