Forgetful IE on iMac

I have a iMac DV 500 (256K) running a fully updated version of Jaguar (Except for QT 6) I have updated IE 5.2 with the security update.

IE loses preferences for home page (reverts to Apple) and for cookies. Although the cookies are there, they seem not to load info. Also, when IE starts up, it asks me if I want to set IE as the default browser. Other minor appearance settings disappear as well.

I have deleted the IE prefs from both the main..library, and the equivalent in the main user folder. Also, I have deleted and reinstalled IE.

The preferences can be set, and they last through 2-5 restarts, then disappear.

I have repaired permissions. The problem remains.

I also use Mozilla etc... on my TiBook So please spare any impulse to evangelize me for some other browser. My wife and kids use IE a lot on the iMac (Cable Broadband ) I hope to continue using it on the iMac.

Thoughts?

Unfortunately, and you don't want to hear this, "IE just does that."

It's a real piece of work. There have been rumors of a real update to this thing, but really, IE hasn't had a worthwhile upgrade since they shipped it with 10.0....
