Why does my superdrive hate me?

It does, it really does

I have burned DVD's before, three to be exact.

I open iDVD, create what I want and all that jazz, put in my quicktime movie files, and click burn. about 99% of the time(excluding my lucky three)when it asks for me to insert a blank DVD-R, i do, memorex DVD-r 4.7 GB, all happy and normal, sometimes I even unwrap brandnew disks, till i ran out of those. It just spits right the hell back out at me(okay maybe it makes some noises for about 15 seconds) and tells me to insert a blank DVD-R disk.

This isn't really to good eh?, cause I really need to burn DVDs, like really need to, that why I got the godamn computer.

thanks to anyone who can read through my half rant , half plea for help.

i would guess it has to do with the quality of the DVD-R disks.

i'd say find a verbatim one, or buy an apple one and give it a shot. best bet is that's where the problem lies.

    you're sure they aren't DVD+R, right?

Yeah, they need to be DVD-R General media. I've gotten DVD-R General media from a number of different places and I've used different brands and they've all worked for me, even the cheap no-name stuff.

I'm absolutly positive positive that they are not DVD+R. I will try the one Apple brand dvd that came with the computer, if it works, i will be coerced to spend every penny i earn on godamn special DVD's made by apple.

Well like I said, that shouldn't be necessary. I've used cheapo no-name DVD-R media and it works fine with my Superdrive. I've burned over 30 DVDs with them. I would call Apple if this problem persists, you shouldn't be having this kind of trouble with the media as long as it's DVD-R General. There's a chance it could be your drive.

The proper route is to contact apple about how to clean the lense, as well as what ever else the problem may be.

Pricewatch.com has a list of CD/DVD lense cleaning supplies and other things under Storage -> Media Other -> Cleaning.

Don't know if this relates to your problem, but on our G4, when burning DVDs, the Superdrive rejects blank discs if you use the keyboard to close the drive. Instead we gently push the tray by hand until it retracts.

I don't know why this is so, but the computer seems to expect to see a pre-recorded disc when the keyboard is used to operate the tray.

By the way, we have had problems with Memorex DVD-R. Apple brand has worked best for us as far as being able to be read by most DVD-R capable players.

    Hope you've solved your problem.
