Some interesting background information on friction-stir welding

Friction-stir welding was improved and enhanced by EADS for aerospace, and it is now being applied as the DeltaN FS® technology to other industrial applications.  Rather than the melting process of traditional welding, friction-stir welding intermixes metal in the areas to be joined – softening up material for fusing by mechanical pressure. 


 


EADS’ break-though is a design that puts the high revolutions on the welding tool’s pin, and zero revolutions on the tool’s shoulder.   This successful design has been endorsed by industrial robot-maker KUKA, along with Grenzebach Automation – a system integrator and process solutions provider.
