After a crash, you will need to use the stand-alone installer... Make sure to attempt all such things which are in Apple's documentation... Since they stated such, I'm guessing that's what you're seeing... If you've already tried such, then you might have to wait for a better answer
If it still won't catch it, wait for the standalone installer to be released (very likely tomorrow) and try installing it manually.
If it won't install through Mac OS X's default Installer.app, you should then try installing it via the app called Pacifist. Though, if you choose to use Pacifist, you should IMMEDIATELY use Disk Utility's "Repair Disk Permissions" on the startup volume after it is installed (and before restarting). I say this because Pacifist has botched permissions for me several times in the past.
Delete the MacOSXUpdate10.2.3.pkg package from the /Library/Receipts folder and try Software Update again.

did that, no dice (im not completely helpless you know )

didnt think that far ahead... hopefully i wont have to.
thanks for the speedy help... im hoping to have this resolved before she comes home from college so she can use the school's connection to d/l the 50 mb update...
also is there anyway to tell for sure whether or not 10.2.3 is installed?
also is there anyway to tell for sure whether or not 10.2.3 is installed?

Well, not really unless you want to see my lsbom thread and check the modification dates of a bunch of those files on your system. I believe the installer installs the files in the same order as that list. So, if you check a few files at the beginning of the list, in the middle, and at the end, that should give you a good idea of how far the installation progressed.
what is up???
oh and deleting the plists isn't a bad thing is it? they will just be rebuilt on the next application launch... right?
The plists are simply preference files. If you delete one for an app, that app will just revert to its default settings and regenerate the plist on the next run.
and it seems as if the installer did complete... probably just crashed in the optimization phase... oh well
I was using the Software Update Installer. He crashed in the optimization phase (everything crashed, I came right back to my desktop with no apps running).
I then reinstalled 10.2.3 because I had already saved it over the menu in SU... now I'm repairing permissions. hope it all works out.
