I think I preferred Hammer...

"As mentioned yesterday, AMD unveiled the offical name for their 8th generation, 64-bit CPU: AMD Opteron.

The naming will basically be similar to their 7th generation products: the high-end products will be called Opteron, while the mainstream will be called Athlon. Actually, AMD hasn't nailed down the mainstream name just yet, but it's supposedly going to contain Athlon in some way/shape/form.

In addition, AMD has also issued another press release detailing Microsoft's support for this next generation platform.

Tomorrow, AMD is going to demo this system working on a 64-bit development version of WindowsXP, and show both 32-bit and 64-bit applications running simultaneously."

Clawhammer & Sledgehammer were better names.

    I agree. Opteron sounds like something I should clean my contacts with. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

I liked hammer also, but AMD wouldn't have been allowed to copyright the name.

The more specific "ClawHammer" could be though.

Wasn't Opteron a transformer? Didn't he kill optimus prime or something?

Oh my goodness! Opteron???? I'm embarrassed just saying it. Lord will someone please slap AMD. Athlon wasn't too bad but Opteron...gag. Whatever company is making money marketing foolish names to AMD should be laughing all the way to the bank.

Opteron is the name for the products that will compete against the Xeon. Clawhammer systems will continue to use variations of the Athlon name to compete against the Pentium series.

Personally I'd like to see an Athlon 64.

How about we start naming processors after elements? The "Opteron" could be the Neon, and the G5 could be called the "Einsteinium".

We could nickname the P4's Pb.

I think element 113, or unobtainium, would be a better name for the G5.

I don't know about you guys but I want one of those Octium IV superchips made by E-Com-Con (Lone Gunmen-pilot.) Imagine the rendering and encoding you could do with one of those and the right hardware associating with it.
