Hey,

I'm tryin to set up an external microphone to my PowerMac G4 AGP. I have Mac OS X v10.2. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get this crap to work. It's for use with iMovie. In the system pref's sound pannel it shows NO volume from my mic. It's some Gateway piece of junk my friend gave me, but it was brand new in the wrapper so I'm guessing it's not broken. It plugs straight into the microphone jack on the back of my comp.

Thanks for any help!

You should find a switch on the mic to change between line and Mic level input. macs only accept one.

To my knowledge, there are no buttons or switches on this microphone. The mic I am using is very similar to this one, although not exact.

I hope that will provide a little more information. Thanks for the quick response!

Check the specifications. I'm pretty sure that is a line level input, not a mic level input. You will need something like iMic to boost the microphone level.

I'm not sure I quite understand the difference between "mic-level" and "line-level" input. Could someone please clarify this point? Thanks...

I remember running into this when I was looking for a mic for my old clone. In a nutshell, PC mic's don't work on Mac's. Something about the way they pass information to the port. You need to buy a little dongle adaptor that fits between the PC mic and the mic port.

I bought one that Griffin used to make, but I'm sure you could find one in a CompUSA or maybe AppleStore. Or google for it. These days Griffin sells a PC-mic-to-USB adaptor that I guess serves the same function.
