Changing files into folders

I know you can change a foilder into a file, but how can I change a file into a folder so that I can edit its contents? Is there a hidden file extension or something.

If not, how else can I disassemble files and edit their contents?

You cannot change files to folders or vice versa on any Mac OS. Perhaps you are confused about the .app and similar packages that the Finder treats as single files, no? To open these packages as directories in the Finder instead of launching them, control-click the package and choose Show Package Contents.
