Apple Plans to Woo Schools, Colleges With PC Modeled on Early iMacs

Apple Computer (NasdaqNM: AAPL - news) Inc. (AAPL), moving to defend its position in the education market, is unveiling its first personal computer designed exclusively for schools and colleges, Monday's Wall Street Journal reported.

The computer maker is introducing a white one-piece desktop machine called the eMac, priced from $999 to $1,999, that resembles the original iMac introduced in 1998. The new machine is designed to woo educators that are being courted with low-price PCs that run Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM: MSFT - news) 's Windows operating system. Dell Computer Inc. has been particularly aggressive and last year surpassed Apple in shipments of desktop machines for education, according to some market researchers....

combine that with the store downtime...

This looks like a great machine, but I'm wondering if it will steal sales from the swingarm iMac? Seems to me that Apple is practically admitting that a 15" screen isn't big enough.

According to the Apple press release, the new iMac is selling well to consumers but is getting some resistance from schools. That's why they produced the eMac. The eMac is much more profitable then the Flat Panel iMac for Apple's bottom line.

As far as sceen size, the eMate is slightly smaller in viewable area then the 15" LCD on the iMac.

its education only by the looks of it, as you can't buy it from the UK apple store.

    i like it!

I'm sure schools would prefer the eMac. I can't imagine that swingarm lasting more than one semester in the hands of 30 third graders.

But I was considering getting a new iMac for my sister, so she could finally get rid of that Bondi Rev. 'A.' Now I wouldn't think twice now about getting her an eMac instead. She's already use to the design, and would probably appreciate a 17" fixed screen more than a 15" swingarm one.

Yup. It's for education only, hence the name eMac (the "e" stands for education). Look at the Apple site for complete info.

And I can imagine that the main resistance to the new iMac with schools is PRICE! You can't expect schools to go gung-ho with this new eMac at a base cost of $1250. It's not going to happen. Schools want to buy cheap machines. When they see they can get a decent PC with WinXP and a few site licenses for some basic software at a price of $400/box, it's three PC's to every eMac. It's not really hard to choose. Also, I'm sure with this latest move that Apple's getting ready to axe the CRT iMac, which makes any options for a sub $1k Mac disappear.

Apple hardware's in such a sorry state it's not even funny.

At first I thought "What's the point of this education Mac?"... but after a little thought I think the eMac will find its niche. I haven't looked at the store for institutions, but I'm assuming that's where they're selling eMacs with just the CD-ROM for $999... education individuals can only get the combo version (or at least what I saw this morning). At $999 w/a 17" monitor, this will be good for schools who want a G4 without paying $1300+ for it. Overall a good move by Apple.

This is AWESOME. This thing is going to be an important piece of strategy for Apple to continue to dominate the education market. It looks good...and remember those stories about a 17" iMac?

The only problem I see are the two exposed speakers in the front. What about a fourth grader with a pencil?

Good education strategy Apple. Now give something to the pros.

Actually, if you look closer you can see that there are little white covers over the speakers like the all-in-one iMac's.

EDIT: Whoops, I guess not all of the pictures have those covers. I guess the system comes with it and you can decide weather to use them or not? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I still like the CRT iMac better. But the specs on this system are a lot better though. If Gateway had a CRT all in one, the eMac would be it.

I don't know about all of you, but to me this screams, G4 ibooks.

Plus, I think it may quitly say "updated iMacs at MWNY."

Or the paris expo at the lastest. It doesn't have the coolness of design or put anywhere quality LCD screen, but other than that, the tech specs are VERY close.

Man, this really shows how tightly apple has shut down the rumor mill.

Besides random predictions about a 17" crt b4 the new iMac came out, we didnt hear a peep about this!
