iBook Display black on startup

My dad's iBook is booting with a totally black screen on startup 90% of the time now, and when it doesn't, it freezes five minutes after startup. I've tried reseting the PMU, taking out the RAM, letting it sit with no battery for hours, the works. Display is still black when booting off a CD...

It's an iBook 500, Dual USB.

Anyone have anything else to try before I send it to Apple?

just telling you that it's important to include all relevant info in your first post.

    a <a href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75128"; target="_blank">firmware</a> update may be necessary.

Yes, 10.2.3. As for the firmware update, I can't get it to stay on long enough to download and install a firmware update lately. This morning it stayed on long enough for me to plug my iPod in and copy files off, but it froze as soon as I ejected my iPod. (Not exactly at the same time, but very shortly after).

Logan: Check out the thread below on Apple's Discussion Boards:

You might have the problem where the cable that tells the backlight to come on is pinched inside the hinge. That was the problem when my screen went black prematurely, when I opened the screen beyond a certain angle. Because my iBook was long out of warranty, the repair cost me $300. But I'm happy to say that my iBook is fully functional once again.
