how can i track visitor to my website? easy publishing program for website?

how can i track whom came to visit my website? i am not an expert on it, and all i know how to do is put a counter on it (used golive to make besic site-since i hate flash websites). is there a program or "how to" on this matter? also, what program could (do you recommend) i use for the basic publication of a website which can be updated daily easily? i thank you again for all your help!
