SVCD/VCD help

I've been a mac user for quite a few years now but am a serious newcomer to digital video. I am trying to make a SVCD or VCD from an avi file and have tried unsuccessfully using ffmpegx and toast on my powerbook w/ OS 10.2 using the internal cd-rw drive. I have tried to research the question on mac forums but still haven't been able to find a simple/easy to understand answer. So any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
