There better be a modern pro machine and a G4 iBook, and LOWER prices. The LCD market is already recovering, I want to see price drops.

LCD prices are stabilizing, which simply means that they're not increasing any more.

I don't anticipate price drops any time soon.

Ok, so today is april 29, right, not may 6, Jobs's keynote date, and apple comes out with new products. What does this mean, A) Steve just wants to talk about 10.2 at the WWDC, or B) he has something more up his sleve, like maby a G5?

    Just food for thought

I think they could work on supplier issues, sign a few deals, get busy and have a modest price drop ready for most of their current models by MWNY. I wasn't thinking anything too soon.

Any G4 advancement is welcome, especially a smaller fab process with support for DDR.

Exactly. When that day comes, I'll find myself working a lot more and obsessively reading appleinsider a lot less.

This wait has become a sickness. Mea culpa, I know, but c'mon Cupertino! You're doing great stuff with the eMac, the iApps, and so on. Yes! Now go to the Power line and make users flush for a while. Incantations! Whirling visions! Jobs at the cyber-altar!

    I am sick....

Prices lower? Okay the top end G4 is already lower than they have been historically (right at $3k).

And if you think all Mac prices are way too high you prolly weren't around for the $4k 8500 or $5k 9500 days, average prices not the top end either.

How about 17" CRTs costing $1k? Or a crappy powerbook costing $2500 with no optical drive or room for one in the drive bay? Ever pay well over $120 for an Apple full-sized keyboard?

Apple current prices compared to its own historical prices are substantially LOWER.

The other box makers sell cheap-@ss junk boxeswith tiny hard drives and cheap CD drives (with paid upgrades to CD-RW) and tiny monitors such as a 15" CRT (paid upgrades to 17" CRT or flat panel).

Look at those DELL adds or Gateway (steal, rip, burn music) ads and look at the specs. They are pathetic! 20 gig HDs are ultra small and CHEAP. Apple is using 40 gig as a minimum now and including Superdrives drives in most desktops or Combo drives in portables.

Plus you get developer tools with Mac OS X, does Microsoft XP come with any programming tools at all? CodeWarrior costs over $500 on its own for one platform.

You really are getting a deal, even with the modest price hike Apple slipped in on the iMacs and now the PowerBooks; the top end PB comes with a $100 AirPort card already installed which is another $30 extra when purchased separately.

Geeze if you are so disatisfied with Apple buy a Sony Viao and run Linux on it. Just don't expect 5 hour battery life or reliable FireWire/USB ports or any integrated software/hardware solutions that match Apple's offerings.

Agreed. Also, a smaller fab process generally means other improvements, such as larger L2 cache due to the extra space on the chip.

Ideally, the G4 would be pretty good if it added DDR support, increased L2 cache to 512k, and possibly added another FP unit. I'm not holding my breath on the FP unit, but all that with a nice MHZ bump would make the G4 much more competitive.

I just hope the G4s in the consumer lines means that the iBook will get one, and the Pro systems will get a next generation G4/G5 chip with the right MotherBoard techs to help distinquish the lines. BTW Who was the guy who said "No new products."?

I agree. Here's the info regarding your question:

    [quote]Article by MacCentral's Jim Dalrymple, 2/11/02:

In the last 56 days Apple has updated every product in its pro and consumer line-up. Starting with a PowerBook change in mid December, Apple then updated the iBook with a 14-inch display at Macworld Expo. The Expo also saw the introduction of the revolutionary new iMac. Then in late January, the company finished the updates with a new line of Power Mac G4 desktops with speeds up to 1GHz in a dual-processor configuration.

While the year started off with a flurry of product announcements, the upcoming Expo in Tokyo will see no new hardware; in fact, the company will not be updating its line of computer products for the coming months, according to Apple's senior director of Hardware Product Marketing Greg Joswiak. Joswiak recently spoke to MacCentral at Apple's Cupertino headquarters.

"We're not planning to introduce any new CPUs at Macworld Tokyo, as a matter of fact, we're set for some months now," said Joswiak. "Having just updated all four product quadrants, it's really nonsensical to think we're about to update the quadrants again at Macworld Tokyo." . . .
