WMP keeps giving me errors. Is there a way to translate .wma to .mp3?

Sounds like it could be using a codec that isn't included with WiMP for Mac. In a stroke of genius, Microsoft made it so you can't add or update codecs to WiMP for Mac.
There really isn't any reliable way of converting these files on a Mac.
