Software Update fails

Failed. Error occurred while checking.

I reinstalled OS X and now software update fails. I did a clean install erasing the drive. (I backed up all my stuff but havent put it back on yet) I am not having connection problems, I even downloaded the os x combo update manually but software update still fails. Does anyone know how to fix this?

can others try their SU for this person...i am at work...it could be down because apple is working on it, loading 10.2.4 into it or the server is down...so perhaps it is not your machine nor your os install, perhaps it is apple....g

its actually happening to several people. a thread was started in one of the other categories suspecting upcoming updates.
