loginwindow connection closed
OS X 10.2.3
Boot up takes place like normal, but when the login window should come up, I get the administrator authentication window, asking me for a name and password to make changes to the loginwindow, in it's place. Filling this out, just causes an endless loop. If I cancel, then I get dumped to the console. Here I am given an error with the date, name of the computer, and WindowServer[40X] loginwindow connection closed. (where X is incremented based on how many times I tried to log into the admin window.) Things I had changed since last reboot 1 day ago with updates from Software update (Quicktime, iCal, Safari):
/etc/hosts file, to add a few entries for local machines
Apples X11 installed
Fink was already installed, but I installed GIMP since last reboot.
Things I've tried:
removed the com.apple.loginwindow.plist
returned /etc/hosts back to its original
I do not have a webcam, so the other similar topic on the boards should not apply.
I do not want to have to re install over something this stupid. I am beginning to miss linux. At least there I knew how to fix X when it muffed on me.
