LG.Philips LCD Demonstrates Wide-format TFT-LCDs at CeBIT 2002 2002.3.13

LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., a leading innovator of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, will showcase a stunning new array of wide-format (밯?for 16:10 or 16:9 wide-aspect ratio displays) thin-film transistor (TFT)-LCDs for monitor, LCD TV and other applications at CeBIT 2002, to be held March 13-20 in Hannover, Germany. Specifically, LG.Philips LCD will be demonstrating its impressive new line-up뾲he 17W, the 23W and the 30W TFT-LCD modules.

According to Bruce Berkoff, LG.Philips LCD뭩 executive vice president of marketing, the industry has witnessed an increased demand from OEMs for wide-format LCDs for both monitors and HDTVs, based on the increased viewing benefits and capabilities they provide. 밚G.Philips LCD is committed to accommodating this rising demand, and, with our technology leadership and substantial manufacturing capabilities, we뭨e well-poised to capitalize on the expanding market potential of wide aspect LCDs,?noted Berkoff.

LG.Philips LCD will be featuring the following display modules at the show:

17W WXGA for Desktop Monitors and PCTVs:

LG.Philips LCD뭩 new 17W display is designed for new wide-monitor formats, all-in-one PCs and personal-computer TV (PCTV) applications. This wide-format display offers WXGA resolution of 1280 x 768, 65-percent color saturation, 400cd/m2 brightness and a response time of 25 ms. Furthermore, it is extremely thin (16.2 mm) and weighs only 1,900 grams.

23W for Monitors and HDTVs:

The 23W TFT-LCD, designed for monitors and HDTVs, is a WUXGA (1920x1200) model, offering a wide viewing angle of 160 degrees in all directions뾯educing gray scale inversions and ensuring color integrity, regardless of the viewer뭩 position. The 23W뭩 slim design (only 25mm thick) requires less workspace, while the display itself consumes less power, emits lower electromagnetic radiation, and lessens end-user eyestrain, compared to a CRT-based solution of similar resolution and size. In addition, the 23W can fit into the footprint of many existing 22-inch monitor designs, significantly reducing the system integration costs for OEMs.

30W WXGA for HDTVs:

In an effort to meet the OEM demands for standardized LCD TV sizes, LG.Philips LCD will also demonstrate the 30W TFT-LCD for today뭩 HDTV market. The 30W boasts an impressive wide viewing angle of 170 degrees in all directions, brightness of 450 cd/m2 and a WXGA resolution of 1280 x 768. In addition to its large screen size and slim form factor (46 mm), this display offers a high contrast ratio (450:1) and aspect ratio of 16:9.6.

For those interested in learning more about these particular products or seeing these displays first hand during CeBIT 2002, please contact Stacey Voorhees via e-mail at [email protected], or phone at (650) 968-8900, ext. 108, or visit LG.Philips LCD at stand C59, hall 21.

Will Apple drop the 22 inch and introduce 30 inch at MWNY ?

SEOUL, Korea ? January 4, 2002 ? Samsung Electronics launches TFT-LCD TV business with wide screen 15.3-inch and 17-inch sizes. The company is also scheduled to come out with 22-inch and 30-inch class versions in 2002. Including the 40-inch TFT-LCD TV developed last August, Samsung is geared with a full product lineup that ranges from 15 inches to 40 inches.

Samsung?s latest 15.3-inch and 17-inch TFT-LCDs have a wide (15:9) aspect ratio, boosting resolution to four times that found in CRTs. Therefore, they are well suited for digital broadcasting. A screen brightness of 450 candela per square meter and a contrast ratio of 400:1 are up to CRT standards, which will enable Samsung LCDs to expand from monitor segment to the TV segment.

Many LCD TVs currently on the market still require some technological advancement; for example, their slow pixel response time causes a ?ghosting? problem. However, Samsung Electronics has accomplished some technological breakthroughs. Last August, Samsung introduced a 40-inch TFT-LCD that boasts a response time of just 12 milliseconds. The company has also developed a unique Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) technology to provide a wider viewing angle. PVA is now being applied to all models of 20 inches or larger, enabling the products to rival cathode ray tube (CRT) performance.

That 30" display only has a resolution of 1280x768 so no, Apple will not be using it. It is meant for HDTV sets and not for computer monitors.

This correlates to my ghost trails comments. Each of these monitors currently available has 30 ms response times or worse.

Also it's interesting that the 17" ASD is not made by LG-Philips. Is it made by Samsung? I have found the 17" ASD to be much better than the other monitors in terms ofimage quality...
