I have had my 667 DVI since 8/23/02 (Jaguar day) I bought it as a refreshed machine...

there already was a bunch of chipping at the rear of the machine when I got it, but it wasn't serious so I didn't bother complaining... (a mistake, I know) Now there is a LOT of paint missing, mostly at the hinges, I'd say about 20% on the right one and 10% on the left... there are also other places that the paint is coming off, but not nearly as much and they were most likely my fault...

there is a slight amount of bubbling just above the CD drive, but no paint has fallen off from there.... yet...

there are a bunch of other small cosmetic problems with it.... what should i do to fix them? can i even do anything under warranty?

if it's under warranty, call Apple. they'll fix it. paint chipping is an acknowledged problem at Apple.

That is bullshit!!! I had to argue with them to accept it. They checked their 'inside knowledge base' and there are internal documents that say they will replace the part. Furthermore, ignore the morons at the genius bar - call Apple directly, because either way, it has to get sent to Texas for the repair. Even if the support person on the phone won't do it, hang up and call back until you get someone who will.

I have done this repair twice in the last month. Apple will replace the top case.

dude what did you do to have to get it replaced twice?!?!!?

if it IS covered.... what is the advantage of doing it now as opposed to 4 or 5 months from now to get the most out of my new casing?

Yeah right. I get lucky one time (as opposed to every other time I've ever called Apple) and all of a sudden, I know how to deal with Apple.

i'd hold off on it. it's cosmetic, so IMO not really a problem. the machine will run the same, whether or not a few flecks of paint are on it.

you' have better luck waiting for a few reasons.

    1. it will likely just run into the problem again, so you might as well wait as long as possible

    2. just in case they come up with a new paint for these models that doesn't chip, you aren't going to get it now.

    3. at some point down the line, you migth ahve something really break on your laptop. at that time it would be easier, IMO, to get them to fix the paint while they were fixing a real problem.
