wireless software router question

I have a G4 1.25 DP connected to a high speed DSL connection (sympatico). i am attempting to use it as a software router so i can connect my Ti powerbook wirelessly and later other machines. i am not using a base station. With the helpful suggestions i got here a few weeks back, i have succeeded to some degree. i can surf the net, i can receive messages through hotmail and apple's mail server, but i can't send any messages either through hotmail or through apple's mail app. i can use live update by symantec but i can't use apple's software updater. i have all the firewalls disconnected (though that makes me a little queasy as it exposes my G4 to the wild and woolly net) on both machines. i am using encryption on the wireless network. (128 bit and it's password protected) i'm running 10.2.3 and have all the updates installed. what am i missing? i know it's something stupid!
