reading external FAT32 drives on Mac?

Hey,

Does anyone know, will Mac OS X 10.2.4 read and/or mount external drives that are FAT32 formatted? I know my Powermac won't mount an internal drive that's FAT32 formatted (at least not automatically).

A little background...my girlfriend has an '99 Tangerine iMac (no FW) with a completely full 6GB drive. She also has a Sony Vaio laptop with Firewire. I was thinking of telling her to get one of those external Firewire/USB hard drives so she could store some of her files on the external drive and use it with both the iMac and the Vaio.

Also, when she gets a new desktop machine (presumably a new iMac), she could plug the external drive into the Firewire plug and get better speed.

Do you think an external FAT32 formatted hard disc is the way to go in this instance? If not, what should it be?
