macbook pro wont charge unless closed or sleeping.

Hi,


I have a 2006 17" macbook pro. It is a fairly reliable machine but i keep having this problem and it is making my life kind of difficult. It will only recognize the charger when plugged in if it is closed or in sleep mode. I can then wake it up or open it once the LED has come one and it will be charging but it is somewhat time consuming since it takes so long to reconnect to the server and start functioning again. Please help me.
