Illustrator 10 won't save my last 2 1/2 hours of work

I have a school project that I'm working on in Illustrator 10 (8.5 X 11, one 150 dpi picture under 4 pt type set to different weights etc. to make up picture behind it). I have been working on this all day, saving periodically, but I haven't saved it in about 2 1/2 hours. I keep trying to save my progress now but it won't save. The progress bar saying 'Writing Illustrator Format' goes at a decent speed to about half way through, but from then on it crawls for about 15 minutes to the end, using all my CPU and RAM. When it gets to the end it just displays the error

"Can't save the illustration.

ID = -1309"

Does anybody know anything that might possibly help with this? I'm really starting to get pissed off at this error.

    Finally I tried choosing "Save a copy" instead, and after a couple tries that worked perfectly.

    I guess the 713th time's the charm

    I bet I know why that was happening. back in the old quark days you really couldn't save over the same file for more than 20 times. I called once and they said the file header got to large and corrupted itself, that i would have 'save a copy' heh. Also you might want to make sure you're saving in the latest version of illustrator until you're ready to go to print.

    Yeah, I was saving in 9 because that's what they use at my school, but I just decided to save in 10 anyway yesterday, so that wasn't it. But I wouldn't be surprised if that was the problem, or at least close to it. Thanks for the future knowledge though.
